"Stone Perfect" by Chris Coward really needs its own literary genre. It is sci-fi-lit, or maybe chick-fit, a very original combination of chick lit and science fiction. Kara, a hardworking, unappreciated mum to two teenage girls and long-suffering wife to the demanding Josh, finds two interesting stones when she is off at a conference. Dandy and Pinky are sparkly gems, one yellow, one pink, and they bring some amazing changes to Kara’s life. At first they just seem to affect
time but gradually a whole alternate universe opens up for Kara. Can she be happy there with Ed, away from her unrelenting and grinding family life? Will this be her chance to escape forever? Or will real life get in the way as usual
and keep her tied to home? Besides Pinky and Dandy, aunt Kara’s stone necklace plays a part in this adventure too.

If anything, the author is almost too successful in her portrayal of Kara’s reality. It is so detailed and so believable that initially the science fiction
element sits a little uneasily. Kara’s mundane world with problems and pressures at work and home doesn’t seem to be the obvious springboard for a trip into fantasy. However, Coward has such a persuasive, readable style that you get fully sucked into the story. It is amusing, romantic, and heartbreaking. You run the full gamut of emotions as you read. This is a very interesting and courageous novel, that pushes the boundaries of woman’s fiction. It is a challenging and engaging read, and ultimately a very successful, innovative novel.

Novel Rocket
This category is my personal favorite: Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror. The winning story falls with the Fantasy side of that range, and it was the judges’ unanimous choice. The characters are relatable and the writing was good enough to draw the reader fully into the story right off the bat. Not only that, but the synopsis shows it has a sweet, satisfying resolution.
